The tawny coaster (Acraea violae)

Acraea violae or the tawny coaster is a butterfly species new to Malaysia. It was first reported in 1996 and I managed to photograph it in Semenyih in August 2002. Now it is common in the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia, often found fluttering in open areas and among bushes in villages, suburban and urban areas. The gregarious larvae feed on Passiflora foetida and Passiflora tuberosa.
